Thoughts on Behavior

My child will not go to school...

Academic, social, emotional difficulties can all have an effect on a child's ability to go to school. In an effort to express empathy to a child's struggle, a parent might allow the child to miss school. This can result in increased anxiety that worsens the avoidant behavior. A very specific behavior plan can help decrease a child's anxiety and increase the child's self-determination skills.

My child is so disrespectful....

A vicious cycle can start when a parent attempts to address a concerning behavior with a child. They use a reprimand or a mild punishment (e.g. take away phone), it temporarily reduces the behavior; but then the child's problem behavior returns but with additionally disrespect (e.g. outbursts).  A very specific behavior plan can help decrease the disrespectful behavior and improve the relationship between parent and child.
